Someone Cooked

Jerry's map

Robinwho: A man has a show at Grand Rapids Art Museum (till October 18th)
A man is bored at work in 1963. A man draws a map on a square panel. A man draws another panel. A man draws an imaginary city made of these panels. A man makes a deck of rule cards to develop his city. A man makes up a calendar based on his map's population growth. A man has more than 4100 panels, covering over 2,300 square feet. A man's imaginary world is wide enough to stretch from New York City to Philadelphia. A man is named Jerry Gretzinger.

Wisława Szymborska: Two Poems

Robinwho: Apparently I could not find anything else good enough—so here's the magnificent Ms. Szymborska. Will try next issue.
Could Have It could have happened. It had to happen. It happened earlier. Later. Nearer. Farther off. It happened, but not to you. You were saved because you were the first. You were saved because you were the last. Alone. With others. On the right. The left. Because it was raining. Because of the shade. Because the day was sunny. You were in luck -- there was a forest. You were in luck — there were no trees. You were in luck — a rake, a hook, a beam, a brake, A jamb, a turn, a quarter-inch, an instant... So you're here? Still dizzy from another dodge, close shave, reprieve? One hole in the net and you slipped through? I couldn't be more shocked or speechless. Listen, how your heart pounds inside me.
Consolation Darwin. They say he read novels to relax, But only certain kinds: nothing that ended unhappily. If anything like that turned up, enraged, he flung the book into the fire. True or not, I’m ready to believe it. Scanning in his mind so many times and places, he’d had enough of dying species, the triumphs of the strong over the weak, the endless struggles to survive, all doomed sooner or later. He’d earned the right to happy endings, at least in fiction with its diminutions. Hence the indispensable silver lining, the lovers reunited, the families reconciled, the doubts dispelled, fidelity rewarded, fortunes regained, treasures uncovered, stiff-necked neighbors mending their ways, good names restored, greed daunted, old maids married off to worthy parsons, troublemakers banished to other hemispheres, forgers of documents tossed down the stairs, seducers scurrying to the altar, orphans sheltered, widows comforted, pride humbled, wounds healed over, prodigal sons summoned home, cups of sorrow thrown into the ocean, hankies drenched with tears of reconciliation, general merriment and celebration, and the dog Fido, gone astray in the first chapter, turns up barking gladly in the last.

Twins

Robinwho: And inspired Twin Peaks (I just made this up).
They were separated as babies and raised by different families. Both married a Linda. Both divorced Linda. Both then married a Betty. Both had sons named James Alan—one spelled his Allan. They met for the first time at 39. They are Jim Lewis and Jim Springer. Oh yes—their respective adoptive parents named them both Jim, independently.

Booby's Journal

Audubon discovers that his work has been eaten by a rat, in a Japanese woodcut depicting Western people from Lives of Great People of the Occident, published by the Japanese Ministry of Education in 1873.

Booby meets Audubon

Went to see the bird guy. Wanted to know why he named us boobies. He was confused and asked me which one. I showed him on my laptop: searching "booby" got you booby trap, and typing in "boobies"... got you worse. He said it was not him this time. I left. I question the bird guy's legitimacy. He could have named us Majestic Azure Talons.

Booby might be onto something, accidentally...?
